1st note of “Chan Chan” by Buena Vista Social Club. reason: always really liked the sound of these guitars. I picked this with an eye to pitch shifting and manipulating it later, I thought it would suit that.

Soundwalk: I decided to go for a walk, hit record and see what New York threw at me. I ended up with some things that I think I can use. Lots of snippets of interesting speech. People’s rhythmic footsteps. Various sounds of the city.

Something purpose made: To round it out, I recently downloaded the demo version of Sugar Bytes’ Obscurium. It’s a Synth VST. I had realised that I had become very hung up on on Poiesis, then decided¬†that a recreation of something doesn’t have to be a negative thing and originality as the absolute end goal of any project can lead to tying yourself up in knots, at least it frequently does with me. In any case: These few notes from its preset “Modulatron” Were exactly what I was looking for: an airy, breathy pad sound, something purpose made for this exercise.
